The title’s dramatic right? You may be thinking, “What the fuck is a ‘mulatto’ and why is she tragic?” (google. it.)
The Tragic Mulatto Chronicles
Welcome to my Web Series where I’ll be sharing my experiences making my latest album, which is currently titled The Tragic Mulatto Chronicles. When I started in the music industry, I wanted to name my label “The Tragic Mulatto.” I thought it was quirky, edgy and a phrase in American history that I could redefine on my own terms. When I shared this idea with my dad, he objected. “Do you really want to be associated with that?” Hmm. He made a good point. Very reasonable.
And very BORING.
I ended up choosing a different name for my label, but this phrase has always lingered with me.
. . . .
I’m now at a point where I just don’t give a fuck if someone doesn’t understand me completely. There are aspects of me that are ridiculously tragic, and there are aspects of me that are gorgeously mulatto. (Which I’m choosing to define as someone from multiple worlds that haven’t always gotten along smashingly.) In my case, this has lead to moments of confusion, misunderstandings, as well as an ability to master at the art of understanding all sides of a story (and then some.)
I take a risk inviting you in to such an intimate experience with me. The project I’m embarking upon (writing and recording my third album) is going to expose all the parts of me: the super fun, confident, creative, terrified, insecure and… ugly. (There, I’ve said it!)
You may not like me. Or. You may love me more than you thought was possible. I’ll take this risk because it means I am being completely authentic. That I am living in integrity with my artistic, full self — and you can’t buy that on amazon.com.
So join me on this journey. Dive in. Read. Listen. Watch. Comment. Come back often. Let me hear your thoughts. If something strikes you please share it. I’ll see you on the inside.
