Summing Up the Race Equation in America
YOU can make a difference.
This weekend, my show premiered at the Santa Monica Playhouse. It was fun, exciting and scary for me.
“Mulatto Math: Summing Up the Race Equation in America” is an edgy and moving exploration of my experience growing up mixed race in the United States.
It had people in tears as well as laughing out loud. And each performance has been followed by an intimate conversation with the audience. The feedback has been incredible.
And today, I want to tell you why this show is so important and I want to ask for your help…
I am on a Mission.
Throughout my life, I’ve been privvy to conversations that you would never normally be allowed to be part of—if you weren’t part of that ‘group’.
For example, sitting in the backyard around the barbecue with my white, Irish, Catholic family, or on the porch at dusk, with my black family from North Carolina.
This was a privilege. And it was also very painful at times.
And the real secret is that these kind of conversations take place every day.
It’s time to share these conversations—and our deeply personal stories.
It may feel uncomfortable. But my experience has been that when you shine a light on the darkness, everyone benefits…
At a time of real division in society, I’m sharing a story that is literally bringing people together.
At a time of rising economic inequality, I’m sharing a story that makes it possible for people to understand each other.
Because it’s time to change the conversation.
Will you join me and become a founder member of the tribe?
Our first step is to put on this show for six weeks in the Spring of 2018.

What people are saying about Mulatto Math…
“Every once in a great while this town showcases a performer who pulls tears and laughter from me simultaneously. If I drank, I would have thrown back a few afterwards to feel I could make it to the end of the day, I was that raw from Monique’s story. She has the unique talent to make me feel what a mixed race person feels like and I am Cracker White guy from Van Nuys. This kind of drag it from the gut comes from Middle Passage, whip lashes, motherfucking DNA beyond it say nay. See you around campus Sister.” – Roland V.
“Monique DeBose is one of those women who has such fire and power in her, it explodes a room anytime she’s in it. She’s not afraid to speak truth no matter how uncomfortable it is. This conversation needs her.” – Christina B.
“If you are in LA, lucky you. Hottest ticket in town. Monique DeBose is a singular talent with a powerful story to tell.” – Mark S.
“What a show!! What a story! It was raw, intelligent and so well crafted while being so entertaining! Your story is a microcosm of the world’s stories of communities trying to mix together and deal with the pain points. It a story and performer ready for a larger stage! APPLAUSE!!!” – Chita O.
